It’s about an hour before Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers play Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre for what may be the last time. Tom Petty’s main instrument was a Stratocaster through his first few albums with the Heartbreakers. These instruments would give Petty access to the smooth, cool sound he needed to write his iconic music. ![]() To illustrate Petty’s varied body of work, here are five of his greatest collaborations with some of music’s biggest stars. Born and raised in northern Florida, Petty began playing music while he was still in high school. Near the end of his life, he would also frequently play the Gibson SG at live shows. Like his contemporary Bruce Springsteen, Petty was always happy to share the limelight with not only his own band but also many other artists he collaborated with throughout his impressive career. While written by Petty, “You Don’t Know How It Feels” – along with the rest of the songs on Wildflowers – was a collaborative effort between Petty and his band, The Heartbreakers.
